I figure since it's already the end of February, I should probably post something. Here's me sticking to my 'once every two months' trend.
- Just this week, my classes have been split in half. I am now looking at class sizes of 9, 11, and 13. Pretty sweet. Unfortunately, it also means that I've now lost half of my students, which is a very sad deal.
- This weekend saw the inagural AllBallz Weekend for the Eastern North Carolina Corps. Lots of good fun, and some sore muscles now after yesterday's basketball showdown.
- In the last few weeks, I've had my share of classroom trauma. First was a week and a half ago when my fourth block class practically mutinied on me. I sent six kids out, each one protesting and angry at me. One student said "Mr Morrison, you should just quit. You can't handle this job." It was a low.
The next day, however, I returned and staked my claim within the first five minutes of class. I began with, "Once you enter my room, I own you," then later moved on to, "The door is right there, anyone who is not here to learn can pack your stuff and head out right now." No one left. Suckers.
After this, I owned them. Unfortunately, Tuesday immediately following brought the news that I would be losing half my students. And just when I was really starting to feel like I was up to the challenge. Damn.
- Spring Break might involve hiking part of the Appalachian Trail.
- Asheville has many craft stores. Many of which I have now been to, and none of which I'm interested in.
- I am begining to warm up to Teach For America as an organization, even though I still have some lingering mistrust.
- The teacher across the hall informed me that she doesn't believe in "fossil fuels." I guess the whole 'decaying dinosaur' thing doesn't fit into her worldview. Alternatively, she's a damn fine teacher of Math.
- Jack competely usurped me as the leader of our HotorNot.com challenge: Check out who the ugliest on our scorecard is! That little shit.
